Beijing. The communist Chinese leadership now allows married couples to have up to three children. China has a strict birth policy because of the strong population growth to date.
Due to a veritable population explosion, China has had a strict one-child policy since 1979. In 2016, it was relaxed and increased to two children. However, with the population now growing slowly and the proportion of people over 65 doubling since 2010, the goal was issued to “further optimize the birth policy.” Population growth fell below the level of the 1950s. Married couples are thus now allowed three children. Exactly when this will take effect is still open.
The reaction from the population is cool. The cost of living in China is generally very high. Raising a child has become four times more expensive since 2005. And for young people in particular, a professional career takes precedence over a family.
